Clue cards represent knowledge as well as physical objects. Learning who someone is, noticing a problem, or reading a document can be as useful as collecting an object.
Build your knowledge
Inspect the environment, read documents, and talk to passengers. New information can add a clue to your collection.
A clue such as Wife or Daughter represents recovered knowledge. It is not an item you craft or consume like a bottle of medicine.
Return with a relevant topic
Bring relevant clues into your conversations and interactions. The suitcase puzzle, for example, depends on knowledge from two different sources.
An introduction matters socially as well as mechanically: Garret explicitly objects when Samuel demands answers without identifying himself.
