There is more than one way to clear the opening door obstruction. You can preserve laudanum by waiting at the clock after collecting the food tray.

Waiting route
Wait until the passengers have been called to eat. Retrieve the food tray from under the seat, then interact with the clock and choose to wait.
If you try to wait before retrieving the tray, Samuel reminds you to check under the seats. If the meal call is not active, waiting does not advance this door-opening sequence.
Other choices
Eating the offered food and consuming laudanum are also supported branches. The laudanum branch consumes the last dose, so consider other passengers’ needs before choosing it.
