Solution
The combination is 19171938: Rose’s birth year, 1917, followed by Theresa’s birth year, 1938.
The game presents this through the option to guess the lock combination. Learn both years before returning to the case.
Where the clues are
Read the child’s note tucked among your belongings to learn about Rose. Use candlelight to read the scratched table message about Theresa.
The lock uses eight digits. Trying only one birth year is explicitly insufficient.
What opening it gives you
The contents include identity documents that reveal Samuel’s profession, and medical supplies that contain the last dose of laudanum.
