Recover your identity, investigate the compartment, and get into the passenger carriage. This route keeps the last dose of laudanum available for later decisions.

1. Investigate the compartment
Inspect the candles to obtain the Light clue. Search the belongings and read the child’s note: Rose Mather was born in 1917.
Inspect the scratched tabletop. It is too dark to read clearly at first. Illuminate it with the nearby candle, then read the message about Theresa Mather, born in 1938. This obtains the Daughter clue.
2. Open the work case
Look under the seat for the unfamiliar case and pull it out. Its lock requires an eight-digit combination.
Use the two birth years in the order 1917 then 1938. The combined number is 19171938. A single four-digit year is insufficient.
Examine the contents to recover your Apothecary identity. Search for a calming substance to find the final dose of laudanum. Finding it does not require using it.
3. Retrieve the food and letter
Follow the Conductor’s instruction to search under the seats for food. Pull out the tray and inspect the letter beside it. You obtain the Membership insignia and instructions to visit the Conductor.
4. Leave without spending laudanum
After the passengers are called to eat and you have retrieved the tray, interact with the clock and choose to wait. This allows the obstruction behind the door to clear.
This route lets you leave while keeping the last laudanum dose. Eating the food or taking laudanum are alternate branches; do not assume they have identical consequences.
5. Explore the passenger carriage
Introduce yourself before asking Garret for personal information. Inspect the bottles near him, and investigate Euler’s notes and his complaints about the noise.
Revisit an interaction when you have learned a relevant clue. Your growing knowledge gives conversations more context.
